Always check containerized stock for pot issues. I was just fooled & onsite with a bunch of very healthy shrubs…up top.
This was what was below…3/4 girdled from frost splitting soaked lower stems that were buried 
since Fall. All of the osmocote was piled around the base of the stems too, from stick dosing the center of the clump.
Summer temps would bring the tops down low to show their real ‘selves’.
